Minutes of Orphenians Concert on December 7, 2017
Staples Orphenians serenaded Y’s Men on Thursday at Saugatuck Congregational Church, in what has become a holiday tradition for both — and a tease for the Candlelight Concerts on December 15 and 16.
The 36 voice a cappella group directed by Luke Rosenberg offered about 12 beautifully vocalized pieces in a range of styles — traditional holiday arrangements, a polyphonic renaissance piece, a cute little ditty Mr. Rosenberg said the group could sing in 30 seconds, then 25, then 20 — which they did in twenty four and one-half on their third go round, and two of their Fall concert numbers.
They included PDQ Bach’s Throw The Yule Log on Uncle John, an irreverent jest at John Brandt. It is Brandt who arranges for the group’s annual visit. And Brandt is one of 16 ninth graders who gathered around a piano at Bedford Junior High School with Music Teacher George Weigle in 1957, then became an original Orphenian when they all moved up to Staples the next fall.
And they finished with a lovely rendition of Silent Night, the favorite they close their holiday concerts with.
This concert again reminded those of us whose children are long out of school just how great our schools continue to be.
