Malumuds "the Fixer" was judged by all to be a book worthy of our attention. Well written and insightful regarding the tropes of antisemitism, a state with an inferiority complex on the verge of disintegration and human resilience. Bok's desire to leave the restrictions of the shtetl ("change your place, change your luck") resonated with several of our members who's recent ancestors came to the US from Ukraine and Russia.. The detailed horrors of Bok's imprisonment made for difficult reading but it was all too believable. Bok's determination to see the day when his innocence would be declared at a trial made him a heroic figure - adversity transforming the simple fixer - giving the book it's powerful message.
Why the authorities desperately wanted a confession was the subject of some debate as was the author's decision to leave the reader without a Hollywood ending or any ending!
It was determined that our October book should be Toni Morrison's "Song of Solomon". Mark your calendar for Thurs Oct 17.
